I cannot even describe how wonderful it feels

I cannot even describe how wonderful it feels to be back home, even if it is pouring and foggy. Despite the rain, the fog made for perfecting shooting conditions, and since model Britney Simerson and I had been in contact about shooting together, I just HAD to give her a call to see if she’d be interested in a fog session!

We Shot at West End Beach in Traverse City, Using a reflector as an umbrella and using a empty plastic subway bag to protect my backup camera and lens (I was just too nervous to use my big girl camera in the rain!). Everything was absolutely worth it!!

Midnight Shoot

I’ve never shot outside with my lighting system before, but desperate times call for desperate measures. This brilliant CMU beauty scored herself a summer internship in the Hampton’s this summer, and I just had to shoot with her before she left.

Finding myself in Mount Pleasant last night I shot Mackenzie a text asking her when her last night in town would be, when she said ‘tonight’ my stomach dropped. I was booked until 10pm, and had nowhere indoors to shoot at after that time. Having shot at the French Auditorium on campus before, I said lets meet there and hopefully the building will still be open. It was not. However, we did find some outdoor outlets outside, and set up camp outside, resulting in some amazing nighttime shots!

Thanks so much for making time for me before you left Mackenzie, especially big thank you for working with me so late at night (our shoot ended at 12:03am) and on such late notice! Hopefully, I’ll be visiting you in the Hamptons this summer for some more amazing shots! 😉

Behind the Scenes: Something Purple

This Saturday I spent in Traverse City shooting “Something Purple” for a Michigan based bridal magazine. We started the morning off at 7am, at impress Salon where our Bridal party had their hair and makeup done by the owner Sandra and her amazing team. Then headed out to the Park Place Hotel, to get finishing getting the bridal party ready in purple sweetheart dresses and tuxes from the Captains Quarters.

After we were all prepped we shot around the hotel, downtown at Sugar Kissed with some custom made cupcakes, the Brew for a round of “Lake Michigan” shots and the Red Dresser some some custom props. Special thank you to my faux bridal party for spending a chilly saturday morning with me, and all the businesses that contributed to this shoot.

Shooting with Senior Rep, Maria

Every Spring I launch a senior representative program in which Juniors from schools in my surrounding area have a chance to gain free senior images for themselves, and get their friends and families discounts on their photoshoot needs.

Today, I got to shoot with one of my Senior 2014 Reps, Maria from the Metro Detroit Area. Although we set out to shoot senior-ish images, we got a little sidetracked when Maria told me she was interested in starting a modeling portfolio

We had Makeup Artist Samantha Jo on set with us to add to the shoot, and between the beautiful senior, makeup and bright sunny day we were able to create some amazing looks!!

Shooting with Jackie & Krista

Yesterday, I got a new lens to play around with, so naturally I had to go and test it out. Those who follow my work, will recognize the blonde bombshell as Krista, but this absolutely stunning brunette, Jackie, is a new face to Summerfrost.

Lately my work has been very pageant themed, Sherri Hill Gowns, flawless hair, ect. I Put Krista in one of my own pageant gowns to shoot around in when she arrived, but when It came to jackie I was ready for a change.
Image

Beauty isn’t all about rhinestones and glitter, so Jackie and I threw together a new look. I wanted something a little more “street” something with edge and style. Seeming Jackie and I shared similar pinterests…I mean, interests… I knew her style and my style would match perfectly.

I absolutely love how these turned out, but if the grunge look isn’t for you, I’ll take you back to the glitter and glam of Krista… who also happens to love the grunge look, as seen here, giving love to my Gold Sneakers.

Shooting with Shaelyn

This weekend I traveled to Toledo with the beautiful model Shaelyn Lucas to compete in the Midwest Galaxy Pageant. Before taking off, Shaelyn needed a new headshot, which turned into something a little more…

These shots were taken in downtown Mount Pleasant, MI where we met up before our road trip, in a matter of 20 minutes (we were racing the sunset). At 16yo, Shae is the most versatile model I’ve ever worked with–she can look an age range of 14yo-20yo depending on the shoot, and it just amazes me.

Image
Image
+ For those who’ve been asking about the dress – It is a custom made, But we suggest looking at Sherri Hill for similar dresses.
+ Also, these shots are a little more mature for a 16yo then I would regulary shoot. They are taken with full consent of Shaelyns parents.

Shaes Pageant Headshot, that the Judges just loved.

5 Tips Every Model/Actress/Photographer Should Know for HeadShots:

As a Model/Actress/Pageant Queen or any professional, your headshot is So important. It is a vital part of your livelihood, and the first impression you give of yourself to others in your industry. After my huge Headshot marathon I hosted this month, I decided it was time for a post on 5 tips/tricks to help you take the Best Headshot you can.

(1) Should I Smile, or Not? This is honestly Preference. When I shoot with those in the industry my first question is what are using the images for. If you are a more commercially geared professional then lay on the cheese, if you are more high fashion and slight smile, to no smile can do the trick nicely. The most important thing I tell clients is that, no matter what your mouth is doing, make sure your eyes have a burst of energy, excitement, venerability, etc. You want those looking at your headshot to be drawn in, and by having a boring expression, they are more then likely to pass your image and move on to the next in line.

(2) Big Arms/Shoulders. Im never surprised anymore when I hear, ‘Can You Slim My Arms in Photoshop?’ The better point, is things that YOU can do to stop arms/shoulders from looking bigger then they are.

  • Wearing Black/Dark Colored & Solid Shirt. No patterns.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts to reduce arm size, Sleeved shirts to reduce shoulder size.

(3) When I smile, My Lips Stick to my Teeth. Take a dab of Vaseline, and run a thin layer across your gums and teeth. Key Word here is THIN, you don’t want the Vaseline to show in the images.
(4) Chapstick/LipGloss. Because lips naturally have lines and wrinkles in them, they always seem a little drier then they usually are. A quick swipe of chapstick is a quick and effective solution!
(5) Makeup – You are good at doing your own makeup, you do it everyday, Still, If you can afford it, Hire a Good Professional Makeup Artist. MUAs can take your headshots from a 5 to a 10.

Mount Pleasant Visit

A couple years ago I lived in Mt. Pleasant, and still travel there weekly every Sunday. When I lived in town I used to shoot with large groups of girls biweekly, but since I moved away I only shoot with clients here and there. Most of my model friends had either graduated from CMU, or were so busy in there studies that our schedules always conflicted. After attending the Komplique Swimwear Event, I realized actually how many girls in the area were interested in modeling, and I knew it was time to work with some new talent for my Project Series.

Thank you to everyone involved, I was impressed by every single girl I worked with, truly. Here are some highlights to showcase Monday and the 15 girls I worked with that day, the Images were shot at the EHS Building on CMU campus!!

Emily – You’d never guess it, but Emily is on the shorter side, but with the way she is working this red couch. WOW! She looks so long, and talk about curves! Emily and I met through Komplique and these red couches at first were just the meeting place for models and I to find each other, but quickly became a valuable prop.

Image

Merissa – Merissa was actually shot the week before, I met her through my cousin Megan, as they are suite mates in the dorm, but I chose to add her in this post as she is in my group of Mt. Pleasant models.
Image

Chelsea – Chelsea was a model that reached out to me. This no gravity image was a little scary, she was hopping in heels and I was so worried about her twisting an ankle, but nevertheless we got this amazing shot!

Image

Chailey. Look at this figure! I almost feel guilty to say that I was eating a piece of chocolate cheesecake while editing this image. Guilt food, of course.

Image

Kayla. Kayla was actually one of the only girls I let wear more then one outfit, not because I didn’t love the glitter sequin shorts (because I did!!!) but when I saw this glitter top in her bag, I just knew we had to pull it into the shoot. I love how high fashion this image looks.

Image

Alyssa. If you haven’t noticed the pattern by now, I told the girls to wear something that sparkles, something you would plan on wearing to a new years eve party or out to a club. I absolutely LOVED Alyssas outfit, and the grace she has in front of the camera was incredible. She certainly didn’t make my job easy picking an image, they were all fabulous. Alyssa was another Komplique girl.

Image

Carley. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. If you haven’t noticed by my previous comments, I am so impressed by all these girls, especially the first time models like Carley. She came in a little nervous, but absolutely blew me out of the water. Wow!!

Image

India. India I met through Miss Michigan USA, and we also kinda spoke about shooting together, and this was our time to finally pull it together. I love everything about her images, the red couch, the dress, the pose, and although you can barely see them here, her leopard print shoes!!
Image

Brittney – Brit I have worked with before for a shoot with Shore Side Co. She came in this outfit, but changed into a lovely satin dress. Unfortunately with the reflections from the strobe light on the satin, I had her change back into her original outfit. I joked around telling her I wanted this images to be relaxed, grunge, and like an embodiment of JayZ. Several poses later just playing around we came up with this. LOVE.
Image

Lauren. I was so excited to work with Lauren, I also came across her through Komplique and immediately knew her potential. Like most images on these red couches everything just works so well. Her and I also did some clone image work, that I will upload a little later on, it is amazing!

Image

Jessy. Jessy was another one that found me and I am so glad she did. It is so refreshing to work with someone with short hair, my portfolio is filled with long locks. I told Jess I wanted her to embody an edgy look, and she did that perfectly. Everything about this image is strong and edgy, and then her face angelic!! She pulled my vision off perfectly.

Image

CoreyCorey is another model Ive worked with in the past for Shore Side Co. Although she is on the shorter side, I always love working with her. She is always down to shoot, and just works perfectly with they way I shoot. What I love most about her image is the red lips playing off of the red sofa. Just wonderful!!

Image

Lainey. Lainey is another model that I met through Komplique. From the moment I picked up my camera She just hit pose after pose, after pose. When I acknowledge her movement she smiled and said, yeah Ive been practicing. Well, great job girl because all of your images were just spot on! I choose this image for her because naturally Lainey has a very innocent look to her, I wanted to shake things up and do something a little more sassy.
Image

Brit & Nikki – These Two are not from Mt. Pleasant, they are actually from my hometown of Traverse City. However, they traveled downstate to work with another photographer and got stuck from the horrible storm we had. It all worked out though because after a phone call, and several text messages later I agreed they should be part of my giant shoot day on campus. I am so glad I invited them. The reason I chose this image was because the very next frame I told them to embody an evil emotion, and although the image is quite dragon-licious, I promised them it wouldn’t ever see the light of day on the internet. I hope you enjoy the upside down perspective.

Grand Rapids Visit & Hitting Model 100!!

Yesterday I spent the day in Grand Rapids shooting with 10 Agency Models, and 5 of GRs best freelance models for my Gallery Exhibit Project 365 Models in 365 Days .

I do not come to the Grand Rapids area often, but I am always so pleased with the city, the different backdrops I can find while shooting there, and the people I meet. While shooting these girls my Project hit a mile marker as I shot my 100th girl in my project series.

Over today and tomorrow I will update this post with featured images from my GR visit!
